I was born and raised in Bonteheuwel in Cape Town, better known as one of the suburbs within the Cape Flats area. I have learnt my greatest lessons from my childhood years and I am beyond grateful for my upbringing. I have learnt so much in my early years about resilience, community, grit, believing in yourself and staying focused on what you truly want out of life. I have never believed in making excuses for myself or looking at what I didn’t have, instead I looked for advantages and growth within challenges, hurdles, setbacks and obstacles.
If there is one term that I truly disliked is the term disadvantaged community. For me personally, we need to reframe what disadvantaged really means. Growing up in my community I have seen how our local community would take lemons and turn them into sweet lemonade. I have also observed the human spirit in all its splendid glory and how it transcends into a state of true empowerment and Grace. For me personally my philosophy in life remains, it’s not where you come from that matters, but where you are going that matters most, you have the power, you make the choices and you hold the vision. Might I add at times you might find yourself standing alone as people who are not aligned to your vision or who don’t understand your passion might think that you are too ambitious. You might be criticised, judged or laughed at in the process, but I have learnt that you have the power to pull your drawbridge and block out, filter and let in what you think is favourable for your own personal growth and dismiss negativity that don’t serve your soul and wellbeing, you have a choice.
Through socio-economic challenges and obstacles, I have observed first-hand the human spirit in action. I have witnessed how people had taken a little and turned it into abundance, how the small things had become big blessings and how gratitude and pride had become the foundation on which our community had stood tall. There is a deep-rooted connection in discovering what truly matters, togetherness, resilience, gratitude, appreciation, but mostly understanding that we are all one and the same at the heart, root and core of it all. I have also learnt that we are the captains of our own ships and through self-awareness, being conscious and awake in our lives we hold the key to knowing how to navigate our own sacred journey on this earth. Intuition has always played a big part in how my life has unfolded to date.
I have learnt that in life we need to embrace the whole journey, not only the good bits or the bits that we deem successful, but equally the days when we hit roadblocks, when things are not happening as we try to control, force or will it to be. We live in a world where unfortunately we are more exposed to glamour, successful images and picture-perfect narratives that can often leave people feeling like they are missing out or doing something wrong within their own lives. This notion not only leads to unrealistic expectations, illusions, being blindly competitive but also creating unnecessary pressure.
I remember having deep and meaningful conversations with my mother and my late grandfather about the journey of life and I really enjoyed listening to their honest, real, raw and genuine take on how they have navigated through the ups and downs of life. I have always surrounded myself with people who tell it like it is, who are transparent about the epic successes and the disappointing failures. I felt like this energy fosters a realistic understanding of the journey itself.
Wherever you may find yourself in life, whether that be starting over, embarking on a new season, riding on the waves of change or going through challenging times, understanding your resilient and courageous spirit of pure light, love and guidance can help you build a strong relationship with yourself.
I believe that we are more resilient that what we give ourselves credit for. I have learnt throughout life, my own journey, during my early childhood years, my adolescence, adult years, epic life changes, career choices, motherhood, being a wife and moving to another country, that being an eternal student of life, learning, growing, expanding and unfolding is what I am here on earth for. Our lives no matter how long or brief, is all about the experience.
